Government plans to expand and decentralise specialised cancer treatment services to improve access to quality oncology care and treatment outcomes across the country.
Speaking at the opening of the Greater Horn Oncology Symposium in Lusaka, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Dr. KENNEDY LISHIMPI said the Government is investing in cancer infrastructure, modern equipment, diagnostics, medicines and specialised human resources.
Dr. LISHIMPI said the upgraded radiotherapy and imaging section at the Cancer Diseases Hospital is a major milestone in strengthening Zambia’s capacity to provide advanced cancer treatment.
He said decentralisation is also progressing, with the Ndola Cancer Treatment Centre now nearing 85 percent completion, while construction of a similar facility in Livingstone is expected to follow.
Dr. LISHIMPI has called for stronger referral systems, early cancer detection and increased research to ensure patients receive timely and appropriate care.
Meanwhile, Radiating Hope Executive Director TOM LADD has commended the Zambian Government for revitalising radiation treatment services and strengthening cancer care through investment in modern technology and specialised oncology services.
